Negative experience: I recently rented through Elite Estate Agents, and while their overall service was professional in terms of processes like referencing, issuing contracts, and reminders, my experience with their agent, Janet, left much to be desired. As a landlord myself, managing four properties, I have high standards for how tenants should be treated, and unfortunately, Janet's conduct fell far short. Upon moving in, the flat was handed over to us in a state that I found unacceptably unclean. Despite pointing out visible issues, such as cake on the floor, hairs, and crumbs, Janet dismissed our concerns, insisting the flat had been cleaned. Our request for a second clean was outright denied, forcing us to deep clean the flat ourselves. At the end of the tenancy, we took care to return the flat cleaner than how we received it. However, during checkout, Janet's attitude was shockingly rude and unprofessional. She seemed more interested in nitpicking minor issues—like dust behind a radiator—than in acknowledging the effort we put into maintaining the property. Her behavior was, in my view, overly critical, dismissive of our concerns, and entirely lacking in basic courtesy. When I attempted to discuss the unfairness of the cleaning fee deducted from our deposit, Janet interrupted me repeatedly, talked over me, and was condescending throughout the conversation. This left me feeling not only unheard but also disrespected. I considered challenging the fee through the DPS (Deposit Protection Service), but due to time constraints, I was unable to pursue it further. On a more positive note, Alan was consistently professional, and the landlord was fair and easy to deal with. However, I strongly believe that Elite Estate Agents should seriously reconsider how they allow their agents to treat tenants, especially when it comes to basic respect and customer service.

Fantastic experience: I have rented with Elite Estates the past two years and am happy to write that my experiences with them have only ever been extremely positive. Signing was straightforward and prompt. The house was presented exceptionally and we had very few problems throughout. When the odd thing went wrong, as is only normal, Elite Estates were very quick to address it. Ending the tenancy, likewise, was very straightforward with no problems and our full deposit returned. Throughout we were always treated with respect and understanding. I have had negative experiences with other estate agents in Durham and it is great to have had such a positive experience. I particularly interacted with Janet and Alan, both of whom have always been lovely, reasonable, and responsive. Although we never required anything drastic, I am sure that they would certainly go above and beyond to look after their tenants. I think the company really represents the gold standard of renting in Durham and the local area. Thank you Elite Estates for such a positive experience.

Negative experience: Elite Estate lettings took £250 from my son as a deposit on a flat - the referencing agency they used was flawed - my son lost the flat and Elite Estates (Janet) refused to give him his deposit back telling him that they had to pay it to rightmove referencing agency. This is a lie - and not returning his deposit is illegal:Beth McGuire (from Rightmove referencing) wrote: “We as Rightmove Landlord and Tenant services do not take any fees or deposits from applicants for the use of our services. Therefore we have no funds to refund your son in this instance, this is taken and held by the letting agent as the person managing the property for the landlord”. This is illegal: From the Saturday Times Money - Charges for viewings and reference checks: Charging for viewings, reference and credit checks have been illegal in England since the Tenant Fees Act 2019 and they are also banned in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Some letting agents are still getting this wrong, though. There are also multiple examples on social media of tenants being asked for “application” or “viewing” fees once they inquire about a property. Tsuman said: “An application fee will most likely be a prohibited payment. My advice is to not pay this and instead register with a reputable agent who will not charge you any fee to find your next home.” Anyone who has been asked to pay to view a rental property should report the listing and agent to their local Trading Standards team. If applicants believe that the listing is a scam they can report it to Action Fraud and contact the online platform hosting the advert, such as Facebook, to ask for it to be removed. This insinuates Elite letting agency, Durham is a disreputable letting agent. I want my son’s deposit returned immediately.

They created a family feel as apposed to the bigger chains which make you feel more like a number. Janet was 10/10 in every aspect of the sale as was Alan. Fantastic experience: Overall Elite Estates and Lettings were very professional and efficient in arranging viewing and informing about the property, and more so in the process of reference checking and contract signing. The staff was pleasant to communicate with. A small glitch would be that it took them several days to respond in certain cases, even to urgent inquiries. However, I would gladly choose them as letting agents again. Update 2022. I've used their contract renewal services for the past 3 years. They have been very efficient. Respond within a day. Contracts ready in a few days. Very fast service and pleasant to communicate with.

Janet provided a much more personal approach which we felt was needed to sell our house. The eventual buyers of our house had not even seen it on the market but had viewed a similar property in a different area. Janet recommended our property, did the viewing the next day herself and within half an hour of them leaving we had accepted a cash offer for only a few thousand below the asking price! Negative experience: Absolutely furious this morning, waking up to a phone call from my partner at 9am saying Janet has given away our viewing slot at 10:30am because he couldn’t answer the phone at 8am, because he was at work!! He works overnights and doesn’t finish till 9am. Will not recommend and will definitely not view another house with them, they are meant to be helping us which should mean catering to the times we are available, today we are available from 9am that’s why I booked the viewing at 10:30am not 8am! So unprofessional.

As we were moving 300 miles away from home, it was quite a daunting task but Alan was extremely helpful and got us all ready to move in to a property. Unfortunately, the tenant in the property refused to move 4 days before we were moving up. Through their dedication and fantastic customer service, Elite managed to find us somewhere else (which is even better than the first) even though it was not between us anymore as the landlord would be liable for our issue. Right from the very start we could see that Elite Estates and Lettings was a very professional Company .The description and photographs that were published meant we did not even have to view the property, that speaks volumes for the precise and well detailed description of the property. The professionalism was backed up with the conversations we had with Janet, when Janet told us the house was like a showroom, we had no doubt in our minds that we made the right decision. Janet answered every question in a timely manner (and we had a lot), she understood we were in a different country and made every effort to keep us happy. Fantastic experience: We first started using the services of Elite Estates in 2010 when we decided to rent out our family home for a period of 3 years. This was handled expertly by Alan Lowery who found us a lovely family who looked after our property well. He fully managed the contract and kept us informed on a regular basis. Great service! In 2013 we once again called on Alan's expertise ,this time to sell a property for us. This went completed smoothly and we moved back into our family home. In 2016 we decided to downsize to a bungalow and naturally we contacted Alan. He introduced us to Janet Wilson, Sales Manager - what a delight she is!! Janet marketed our home with such knowledge and enthusiasm and was on hand at all times to keep not only us, but our eventual purchasers , up to date with the proceedings - very impressive!
