David G who did the valuation and took the photographs was courteous and respectful of my property and explained what would happen going forward and kept in touch until the sales consultants took over. The consultants Nicky H and Julie P were always friendly while remaining very professional. I went to view it a few days later and it was perfect for me. The agents have been wonderful and have made the process, so far, smooth and without any issues. Negative experience: Perhaps the worst and most sketchy estate agent in Durham. Dodgy business practices, dodgy staff. I've interacted with J W Wood Durham three times and each time I have been left appalled by their atrocious service. First, I call to book a viewing for a specific house on The Hallgarth: only to be shown the wrong house, 10 minute walk away from the original house. But as soon as we realise the mistake, the house is LONG GONE! You'd think they'd learn from their mistake right? Unfortunately not - I call to book another house viewing, only to find that they call me an hour before to inform me that the house is no longer available. And then finally: I find my dream house. The perfect house that I'd been looking for, for the past two years of being in this area. I message the night before, expressing interest to sign; call them 9am sharp the next day to ask to sign. Only to be informed that the property was let WEEKS ago, and it was pure "accident" that they left it on the site! I have never been so angry. This all makes sense - J W Wood Estate Agents, upon further inquiry, turn out to have refused to sign the Durham University Student Union's Code of Practice (CoP) which specifically prevents any unethical/dodgy/illegal business practices. I should have been able to guess that, because they do not sign such a CoP, they must be dodgy. And they are. Three words: UNPROFESSIONAL. FRUSTRATING. AVOID.

Negative experience: I would not recommend this landlord or organisation based on my experience. When we moved in, the property was not prepared as promised, and many serious issues required attention immediately. Despite raising these concerns, the landlord did not respond to complaints or engage in any meaningful dialogue to resolve them. Additionally, outstanding bills from before our tenancy had not been cleared, which caused further complications and debt collectors. Communication was poor throughout, and key assurances made to us were not followed through. Based on this, I would not buy or rent a property from this organisation, as I found their approach unprofessional, unreliable and unethical.

Fantastic experience: I wanted to sell my parents house as dad had gone into long term care. Given I live 300 miles from the property I needed someone who could manage all aspects of the sale. I invited 4 agents to view the property and decided to instruct J.W. Wood. I'm not sure what it was that decided who I would use as all were excellent but I did not regret my decision for an instant. Ann was my sales agent and the level of communication was above expectation. They handled all enquiries, arranged viewings, negotiated offers and within 2 months had secured a sale (STC) at the asking price. They also offer a low cost conveyancing service via a local solicitor which is another benefit given my location. I can't recommend J.W. Wood, and particularly Ann, highly enough, the whole experience has been stress free. Thank you.

Negative experience: Communication was terrible, put an application in on a flat in Chester le street, yes was up against other people but didn’t even get told if we were accepted or not… went back onto the flat and it said let agreed!! This is disgusting and unprofessional… keeping people informed when trying to find a home in such climate is essential! AVOID! Even the people on the phone don’t seem interested. Was promised the application but had to chase it up… which obviously was a waste of time as someone else was offered it and I was NOT INFORMED!!! Just wanted to add I replied to this response, was given the email as advised email immediately and still haven’t had a reply with my complaint!! These are honestly terrible ( letting)

Fantastic experience: As someone new to the area, and having just relocated back to the UK, I have been so impressed with JWW and Ann Stobbart in particular. She listened to what I was looking for and made sure I was only offered viewings that were appropriate to my personal needs - not always offered by other agencies I might add. Fantastic experience: I have used this company recently to sell my mother's house following her death in February 2025. They were a familiar name as my wife and I had used them during the purchase and sale of properties in the early years of our marriage back in the late 1970's when we still lived in Durham. The sale of this home, after 64 years of occupation, pretty much 'bookends' my life. They have been a pleasure to deal with from initial contact and valuation with Jonathan through to sale (subject to contract). My main contact during the biding process has been Nicky though other members of the wider team have supported me too as needed. Their online validation/signature process at each stage has been invaluable to me as I live nearly 100 miles distant from Durham. Their friendly advice and guidance at each stage has been much appreciated at this emotionally charged time for me and and the rest of my family. A big 'Thank You' to the whole team.

Fantastic experience: I would just like to note how helpful the staff at the Durham branch have been this week, in particular Nicky Hall, who is one of their Property Consultants. I rang to make an appointment to view a house and Nicky set it up quickly, confirming the appointment, as well as sharing her direct contact details, should I encounter any problems. Nicky also took the time to understand what sort of property we were looking for and flagged other houses which met our criteria. Having dealt with several big name agents over the last week, I was extremely impressed by JWW. Not one of the other agents I have dealt with (except for those I listed my house with) have provided anywhere near the same level of customer service. In fact, I have found other agents to be very poor... Not answering or returning calls, unhelpful, no interest in matching us to other properties, and in some cases, rude. Furthermore, we stumbled across a vacant property which is being shown by JWW. We had a real urgency to view it this week (as need to move quickly), but they were fully booked. Nicky understood our situation and enlisted the help of Sarah (who I think works in the same branch), but who does not normally show properties. Sarah met us there on her way home from work, just so we didn't miss out - so a big thank you to to Sarah too. We have just submitted an offer (by email), and look forward to hearing back from the team. I will certainly leave another review once the process is complete, to give a summary of our overall experience. So far, JWW have made a great first impression!

Negative experience: Had a viewing for a property near Durham, told them I am coming from Leeds. The evening before got a message from the agency to remind me of the viewing. Got there on time , the owner said they do not do any more viewings since they accepted an offer last week. Called the agency no one was picking the phone. Answeared 20 mins later said they still do viewings even when the offer was accepted which made no sense specially knowing I am traveling from Leeds and it is a 1 hour 45 mins drive, not fair towards me (customer) knowing they accepted an offer and my chances are close to 0 in buying this property. Could have informed we accepted an offer but in case you still want to see it in if it doesn't go through you are welcome to come. Worst customer experience ever. Thinking that way your agency will decline soon.

Fantastic experience: Another great marketing and sales experience from the team at JW Wood. My mother has used them over the years and they have always been excellent. They seem to have a better pool of buyers and the house was sold in a couple of weeks which was amazing. There is a downside, we used their conveyancing services which were terrible and very stressful to deal with. They were so slow that we ended up being stung for SDLT, communication was none existent too. I had to source seperate independent additional legal advice which cost us as they were getting things wrong with one thing and another. They're not directly part of JW Wood and therefore the above is not a reflection on JW Wood whose aftersales team were as frustrated as we were. A big thank you to Kelly in JW Wood aftersales for helping us sort out the conveyancers, you were superb! Thank you. So a massive thank you to Geoff, Sarah, Julie and team JW Wood. Positive experience: JW Wood's have managed my properties for over 20 years. This is the first time Wood's have sold a property for me and there was no marketing required as the tenants were the buyers. Overall the process was smooth. However I live overseas and the documentation and ID verification was troublesome and time consuming at times due to formatting issues. I feel this is an area which could be improved. The other issue I would add is a feeling at times that you were not sure who you were dealing with as you were sometimes passed from person to person depending on the topic and who was in the office. Not unique to JWW by any means but frustrating for customers. Overall I would recommend JWW as my experience over many years is they are direct, friendly, straightforward and, even with a few hiccups, get the job done.

Negative experience: Think twice if you're a landlord If you're thinking of letting JW Wood manage your property think twice. They charge high fees, communication is dreadful if something goes wrong and they charge you for things without asking! Members of the team admit they have fallen short however managers there do not answer questions in a timely manner and when you suggest a face to face meeting to try and resolve things they refuse! Honestly worse estate agent I have encountered.

Fantastic experience: Would recommend Woods in Consett as they did a great job for me. Unfortunately the same can't be said for the conveyancing solicitor they recommended. They were very difficult to get a response from "have more that 120 cases so will call you back" no returned call also didn't reply to e-mails. They were also working to a different completion date to that agreed with the sellers solicitors.

Positive experience: Our initial contacts were very good getting the house on the market at Christmas. We had very few viewings until about May and we had to reduce our price twice. Even so we had to accept a lower offer, and we felt a bit under pressure to do so, perhaps because of a lack of understanding. However we made a sale, and have very good service since then.
