Negative experience: WARNING TO LANDLORDS- CHECK THE SMALL PRINT! I want to share my experience to help other landlords avoid the situation I’m currently in. When I first signed up with Chancellor, I genuinely believed I was entering a straightforward three-year agreement. After those three years—and after what I felt was consistently poor service—I decided not to continue with them. Only then was I told that the contract requires me to keep paying letting fees annually and in advance for as long as my current tenants stay in the property. This was never something I expected, and had I realised the long-term financial commitment involved, I would have approached the agreement very differently. To be clear, I don’t want to evict my tenants—they’ve made the property their home. But being tied into ongoing fees long after the initial term has ended has left me extremely disappointed. My advice to any landlord considering Chancellor is simple: read every clause carefully and seek independent advice before signing anything, especially around renewal charges and fees linked to the duration of a tenancy. I wish someone had warned me.

Negative experience: Horrible service and an attitude not fitting for a lettings negotiator - Lily Isaac - who kept shouting over the phone repeatedly in the name of collecting details. Really unprofessional behaviour which put me off to even looking at other options listed by Chancellors in the area.

Negative experience: After six weeks we were told we “don’t meet the requirements" for the property we applied for. My partner and I applied for a property we found online. When emails went unanswered, I visited the branch and spoke with Senior Lettings Executive Jordan Gibbs. We completed all the paperwork; Mr. Gibbs said the landlord liked our application and began referencing checks. Then—silence for a month and a half. Despite follow-ups, the only update was a brief email: “You don’t meet the requirements.” No explanation, no apology, and no prior mention that this property had specific income thresholds. We paused our search while waiting and lost valuable time. Overall, the lack of transparency and communication was deeply unprofessional. Clear upfront disclosure and timely updates would have avoided this experience.

Negative experience: Notice that the 5 star reviews are from people who bought houses from Chancellors, not those who rent. I would never recommend anyone rent from Chancellors if they can go with anyone else. Not responsive to emails, ignore serious problems when begged to fix them, did not update our rental contract with new tenants’ names despite being emailed night and day about it and then made our life a nightmare because of this when we tried to claim our deposits back when we left the property. Got to the point we would speak to the landlord and ask him to lobby Chancellors, rather than the other way around. My experience as a tenant with this letting agency was one of the most politcally eye-opening experiences of my life regarding how tenants are treated in this country. It was awful for my mental health. Avoid.

Negative experience: Rude and full of ridiculous conditions. Pass affordability AND have a guarantor? Or pay the entire year upfront AND STILL provide a guarantor? Who pays the entire year upfront, and why would you need a guarantor if you've paid upfront or if you've passed affordability? Complete nonsense and a sloppy attitude. There are far better estate agents in Oxford.

Negative experience: Awful experience throughout. None of our pre-tenancy conditions were met. House was filthy when we moved in despite them claiming a professional clean was done. Maintenance issues were always blamed on us despite them being the most clear cut cases of fair wear and tear. A tenant swap was refused with no reason against what the contract states, and chancellors tried to lie and gaslight us about what the contract meant even though lawyers were agreeing with our interpretation of the contract. We then discovered the house did not have the correct permissions to be a HMO, which chancellors lied about and tried to tell us wasn't an issue, despite the fact the council was threatening us with eviction. After having to threaten them with legal action due to them breaching the contract and failing to do adequate checks on the house's HMO status prior to renting to us, we have finally been allowed to end our tenancy. I am dreading the final check out and what ridiculous things they will likely try to charge us with. They also arranged viewings but forgot to tell all 4 people plus myself that they had been cancelled. When we phoned up to ask where the person from chancellors was they lied and said everyone had been phoned, then called me rude and hung up when I said that no one had been called. We were all shocked at the womans response as everyone agreed I had not been rude and had simply stated facts. I hope to never rent with them again.

Negative experience: Extremely Disappointed with Chancellor in Oxford I had a very poor experience with Chancellor in Oxford. They scheduled a property viewing for me and my friend on a Monday, and we both took time off work specifically for it. Shockingly, just 2 hours before the appointment, they cancelled the viewing, leaving us with absolutely no time to adjust our plans. There was no proper explanation or effort to make up for the inconvenience caused. Our entire day was wasted, and this kind of last-minute cancellation shows a complete lack of respect for people’s time and commitments. If you're considering using Chancellor, be aware that reliability and professionalism may not be their strong suit. I expected much better from an established agency. Not even 1 star worth.

Negative experience: Never ever sign any contract with this company! I did it and tried to cancel it and couldn’t. The service wasn’t provided but they requested money on invoice and when I didn’t pay they put it via quick commercial court and beilifs. I am very angry and stressed and need to spend money on court process and clean my name as it’s CCJ.., please be careful and don’t deal with this company … I have so much stress and money loss only because signed contract in a rush. ( after one week I try to cancel it)

Fantastic experience: Had a great experience with Tilly Saxton! We booked a tour 2 days after requesting one, had a great time, and quickly signed a lease that evening. Very kind and efficient!

Negative experience: Avoid avoid avoid. People are extremely rude here!!! We travelled for more than half an hour to get the property for a viewing and waited for 25 mins and no one was here. Called them, they said they will ask, no reply. Called again they said the agent just left but the whole time no one was there. They just lied and lied and lied. They got so defensive and cut down curses because I said this is a waste of my time. One of the guy said “don’t call me mate cuz I don’t know you.” He sounds so rude and I asked are you having a good day he said “I had a brilliant one until I speak to you.” I won’t go to them unless you want to be treated like rubbish. Definitely avoid such rude people don’t even have manners.

Negative experience: Renting with Chancellors has been a nightmare, very slow to respond to anything at all. From the beginning, our supposedly unfurnished flat had a double bed and other furnishings in it. Which we had to remove ourselves because after 3 weeks, it still wasn't removed and was taking up our spare bedroom which was meant for my partner to be working from home. Generally repairs take a few weeks, which is longer than you would want. They told us that the flat had to be professionally cleaned before moving out - there's no way we were doing that. It certainly wasn't professionally cleaned when we moved in - clutter everywhere, things were dirty and we cleaned the oven ourselves when we moved in. They also raised the rent from £1400 to £1520 after a year because we were moving out soon, and didn't have anywhere to go otherwise. For the new tenant they then lowered it back to £1400 because they didn't have anyone taking the place for £1500. Then last but not least, we unfortunately forgot to cancel our direct debit and the rent still went out (£1520). This is a huge amount of money which was not accounted for in our budget, it has been nearly TWO WEEKS and it's still not returned. We have been chasing frequently and asking for our money back - it's almost as if they're holding onto our money intentionally. It does not take 2 weeks to do a bank transfer back. The landlord has been lovely however, and equally exasperated by Chancellor's incompetence. I honestly don't know who is leaving all the 5 star reviews. Maybe they're dealing with a different agency. Updated to add, I did email the email address supplied and had no answer.

Negative experience: Don’t bother if you’re a student or young person. Regardless of your credit, you’ll need a guarantor and I was being attended to by Josephine who was so rude and blunt. Some things happened on my end and I couldn’t rent a house through them anymore, but the way Josephine overall handled the situation was not nice at all!

Negative experience: Chancellors will overcharge you on rent, and not return your deposit. We’ve been trying for months to retrieve a rent overpayment, and despite dozens of reminders and threats of legal action nothing has happened. Our deposit has not been returned after the end of tenancy, despite the return being agreed and the legal window to return the deposit having lapsed. The lack of professionalism is breathtaking.

Negative experience: [EDITED]: from one star to two, after they re-checked our case, admitted there was an error in the background check and refunded the fees. Thanks for that, and we really appreciated being finally heard. The score stays a two though as what happened and how it happened stays the same: we didn't get a house we were qualified for, and felt under accusation the whole time. I don't wish this experience to anyone under the stress of looking for a new house. -------------------------------- ORIGINAL -------------------------------- I’ve been renting several places since I’ve been in the UK (10 years), and Chancellors, particularly this agency, has been by far the worst experience I have ever had. After having our offer accepted and during the background checks, we had some delays on my partner’s side due to unforeseen circumstances (a loss and political turmoil in her home country). Despite having 3 months (!) before the beginning of the tenancy, we were pushed beyond reason to hurry her incomplete checks, since my side would have granted sufficient guarantee. Then, they changed their mind and refused to acknowledge the income that their own background check agency guaranteed on my side. They canceled the contract and made us pay fees, accusing us of providing misleading information. Reading other reviews, I now understand we dodged a bullet, and we are happy to pay these fees and not be bound to such a disgrace of a team.

Negative experience: Edited due to the experience we’ve had. Initially I thought the experience was good but once making contact with the landlord and having some conversations it’s an apparent that Chancellors use underhand tactics in order to artificially raise the rent or inflate their commission. When viewing the property and it was accepted we were ready and prepared to pay the deposit for the site, this was communicated to Chancellors. They stated that no deposit was required due to the no deposit scheme, we questioned whether this would have any impact on anything and they said it wouldn’t make any difference to us or the landlord. Fantastic we thought, and agreed. At the same Chancellors were having conversations with the landlord, saying that because we couldn’t pay the deposit, they should charge an extra £50 rent.. Over 3 years that’s £1800, during times of a housing and economic crisis, the morality of artificially inflating housing for their own personal benefit truly reflects the values of this company. If you can use anyone else, please do. Just a further note, all these reviews are artificially inflated as they request that you give a review during the sign up process which you feel obliged to given the demand for property.

Negative experience: Worst estate agency I’ve ever dealt with in the UK! Don’t let them fool you into the no deposit scheme. Jordan Gibbs makes out that there’s “absolutely no cost to you as a tenant” by not paying a deposit and then we found out through our landlord (!) who’d asked for considerably less rent per month, that she had been lied to by Jordan as he had stated we had requested not to pay a deposit which was completely false. It turns out by being fooled into the no deposit scheme, we are actually paying £50 more rent each month to cover this, while Jordan gets his commission for tricking us into the scheme. You should be ashamed of yourself. In addition, we were only allowed 5 minutes to view the property when first taking a look at the house due to “10 back to back viewings” and we were told there were multiple offers on the house when we put one in, so Jordan asked us to increase our offer of monthly rent if we wanted to ensure we got it which we weren’t comfortable in doing. We then later found out from our landlord once we’d secured the property that she was only told about three viewings that day and it was only us that put in an offer! Snide and scaremongering tactics by a cowboy estate agent making us pay more to benefit his own pocket and commission in a time of economic crisis. Absolutely disgusting - avoid at all costs. If I could give no stars, I would.

Positive experience: I'm not a big fan of big letting agencies ( always busy, tend to complicate matters). I had a bit of a rough start with them (may be due to English being my 2nd language). However dealing with Jordan Gibbs was a fantastic experience to say the least. He is quite easy to get hold of, very approachable and professional and went above and beyond to help with house hunting. 4 stars for Chancellors, 5 stars for Jordan.

Negative experience: The estate agent did a great job in finding a place for us twice now. The first time we lived in a landlord-managed place, our new place is managed by Chancellors. After moving in, the Chancellors property managers are failing to address defects in the house in a timely manner. We've notified them of defects over 4 months ago, quotation were booked in the week after. After that they haven't given any clarity on whether or not they are going to act on the quotations and they reply to e-mails in an evading manner.

Negative experience: I would give them 0 stars if I could. I use their property management service and they are the worst! Don’t attend to issues till last minute which means we have to pay a huge premium to get things done fast. They never answer to calls and are totally indifferent towards the landlord and tenants alike. No one has bothered to form a relationship which just makes me feel unvalued as a client. Negative experience: It takes ages to respond to maintenance requests. They say ignore ignore ignore until the tenant gives up. Worst real estate agent in town. Thanks god I will be in Oxford for less than a year. Updates: what they have done in the last week proves my review was TRUE. The did nothing. They just sent someone to buy time and then did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. This is for just minor requests. FAILURE. Update: they did fix the issues but took them too long.

Negative experience: I really don't get how this agency is still in business. My experience with them was pretty bad, especially with maintenance and the way they treated me. I've also heard a bunch of negative things from others who've dealt with them. They were the first letting agency I used in Oxford, and for a while, I thought all agencies here were going to be just as bad. But after I moved to a different agency because I was unhappy with their service, things turned around, and I had a much better experience.

Negative experience: I need to express my sheer disgust at the Cowley Road sales department of Chancellor’s in East Oxford, in particular the manager Wasim. I usually only like to write positive and good reviews, but I feel that it’s so important for people to be warned and to know about how badly we have been treated by them, otherwise they will never stop behaving like this and changes will not be made. He lied to us about a crucial/key thing relating to a problem with the house, as we put in our offer. We tried to get it in writing from him from the start about what he had said the vendors were going to do about fixing this issue with the house and although he promised to give us this, we never received it. This was just the start of a long list of problems and more lies. Aside from the “trick” to opening the front door, and us having to wait to get in for over 20 minutes. The communication with him from start to finish was absolutely terrible. He has zero communication skills and continually did nothing he said he was going to, resulting in us eventually having to pull out of the purchase. This has been the most stressful experience for us and we feel so upset at the way we have been treated, but relieved to not be buying a house from Chancellor’s. Please take our advice and do not use this branch of Chancellor’s ever. Thanks for taking the time to read this review.

Fantastic experience: My partner and I are moving from London to Oxford due to work, the news were unexpected and we needed to find a home asap. I was expecting a lot of stress finding a place to live but our experience has been excellent so far. We had a couple of viewings and meeting with Jordan and Steven. They seemed very professional, they listened, understood our needs and found us a house that ticked all our boxes. The paperwork process has been smooth so far and we received the good news just a day after we sent all the information needed. If you find yourself in a urgent situation where you need to find housing quickly like us, I cannot recommend enough this agency, especially Jordan and Steven. They are very knowledge about their properties and extremely helpful.

Fantastic experience: I'm currently dealing with Nita whilst looking to buy around Oxford. I'm not familiar with the area, but Nita has been very friendly and helpful with any questions I had. She was knowledgeable about the property I just looked at too. I would recommend her to people looking at buying through Chancellors.

Fantastic experience: We went through 2 weeks of struggles to find a house to rent in Oxford until we met Jordan from Chancellors East Oxford, who showed us some light in our darkness. Jordan is friendly, full of smiles and listens to our concerns. During viewing, he allowed us to explore on our own while being around to answer our questions. He put forward our case in a very personalised way, he replied to emails and ensured we were well-informed of what to do next. In this situation, what else do you need except for one empathetic and responsive agent, right? My 5 star is for him.

Negative experience: Avoid Chancellor’s at all cost if you are looking to rent a place. I’ve rented in the UK for 10 years and never have I seen a worse agency. They will take for ever to respond to any request and then will make some stupid response on a Friday evening. Don’t expect them to deal with anything urgent, or to be reasonable. I’m three weeks into a long-term contract and regretting it already. My flat is nice, but this agency is just a big scam. I just wish I had listened to all the people that said they were the worst before I rented.

Fantastic experience: Steven had been a wonderful consultant. He had been very helpful in guiding through the entire process of renting. I would highly recommend him and was fully satisfied with his services.

Negative experience: I am taking back my five star review for Chancellors and leaving a 1 star review. Very easy to deal with initially, but since we took up the tenancy there has been nothing but problems. The house was given to us unclean and undecorate, both which were specified in our pre-tenancy agreement. Please avoid this letting agent. Very straightforward dealing with Chancellors as a tenant. Clear and concise communication with a personal touch. Reccomend particularly Steven Sarbatta, pleasure to deal with him and made a very stressful process much more personable.

Negative experience: Viewed a lovely property...and then it all went wrong with Chancellors. Very ethically dubious business practices. 1. From viewing to lease signing took over a month because Chancellors East Oxford agents were completely non-responsive for days on end to either phone calls or emails, no matter how much I chased them (Helen or Antony). Several queries were simply ignored and never answered, while others were only answered several days later. 2. Chancellors uses a terrible referencing company called The Lettings Hub, which uses online forms that are riddled with bugs and constantly deletes data. 3. When we finally got the lease, there were several 'special' clauses listing things that were broken that would not be fixed by the landlord and areas that we would not be allowed to use or access (shed & loft). It took AGES to get any kind of context from Chancellors about it, and that all lease terms were final. It was the first time during the process ANY of this had been mentioned. 4. We signed the lease the next day, agreeing to all of the terms. The following day (the day AFTER we'd signed the lease), the landlord re-listed the property for a higher amount. Chancellors did not inform us of the re-listing...I discovered it myself on Zoopla. (We then chased Chancellors about it, and they said they'd talk to the landlord.) 5. After several more days with several more phone calls and emails that Chancellors never replied to along the way, I had a final phone call with one of their colleagues (Jordan). It was nearly impossible to talk to Jordan because he kept cutting me off and talking over me, completely disrespectful again and again. He had no right to treat me with such disrespect. But totally what I'd expect from Chancellor's after everything else. In total - Chancellors East Oxford wasted an entire month of our time, time that we could have been pursuing other property opportunities. They sapped out all the joy and sense of adventure from moving, turning it into a stressful nightmare. Whether you are buying, renting, selling, or leasing your property out, you are better off anywhere else. "Wasn't that easy?" NO
