Positive experience: Sammy was brilliant from the outset and helpful and always able to arrange viewings when needed. Showing interest in the flat I am purchasing now, everytime I made a call for more Info or such, and got a different member of the team, I continually got told and got hard selling that I needed to go and speak with their mortgage advisor, I lost count how many times. The were always telling me that they can offer great deals etc, despite having told them I had an independent and helpful mortgage advisor, and basically hounding every opportunity so I would go and see them. I didn't. The more they pressurised me, the more annoying it was, and it felt all they really wanted and were interested in was commission from it. If it wasn't for the flat being perfect for me, I'd have probably gone else where.

Last august we rented a property in Weymouth through Connells. Dawn and Harriet were excellent throughout. Their manner was always bright and friendly; every step was dealt with in a timely manner; and they were informative, honest and professional throughout. Negative experience: Our experience with Connells Dorchester started off extremely positive and albeit a very uncomfortable and unprofessional ending we are in our dream home and that all that matters. We were buying a house through Connells through probate and initially were promised that probate had been sent off a month before we viewed the property, after a few months our estate agent selling our property (not from Connells) alerted us that this was not the case and probate had been sent off a day before we viewed the property and unfortunately (completely out of Connells control) was sent off incorrectly so had to be sent off again. The reoccurring theme was that our estate agent (not involved in the property we were buying) or our solicitor would update us on the house that Connells were selling us … I would recieve updates from Reuben (our estate agent at Connells) however this would 9 times out of 10 be after our estate agent had. Although we had a few issues with the purchase and the communication was little, really we had no issues with Connells Dorchester. The issues began the Thursday morning when we were due to exchange. We were perviously told that the vendour of the property was happy to let us have keys early (after all the issues and lengthy wait due to probate) and all we needed to do was sign a key undertaking, this was all being processed, however, out of Connells control the solicitors dealing with the sale of the property were extremely slow. (In hind site I feel that Reuben just wanted the sale completed and to get his commission from this sale). Thursday morning Reuben rang me and said that he believes we will not exchange if we wait for a key undertaking (at this point neither us or our buyers were in a rush as it all happened very last minute). He said “do not worry our vendors have said you can still have the keys without a key undertaking”. Long story short, we were due to collect the keys the Friday. That morning I received a short, unbothered email from Reuben stating that the vendor has spoken to his solicitor and now feels uncomfortable to hand the keys over as has been told not to. This email along with the following, Reuben held little ownership or bother - quite frankly he couldn’t care less. Obviously we were not happy as would have never exchanged the previous day or agreed to complete 3 days later without it - we wouldn’t have time to empty our house before completion due to me working away and a young child. Later on Reuben contradicted himself (again) and admitted that the reason the vendors didn’t want to hand keys over (understandably may I add) is because they had received the same letter that we had, that Reuben had signed off stating we should not hand keys over until completion. After all of this we really expected Reuben to at least apologise for his miscommunication and mistake. Sadly we never heard or saw him again, he didn’t even wish us well in our new property. For us this was the tipping point and the reason for our sadly negative review of Connells Dorchester. We all make mistakes and misjudgments in life, it’s how we own them that makes all the difference. On the Monday morning we received a call from Connells to collect our keys, we went to collect them and were greeted by the store manager Lily (who on all other occasions came across really well, sadly not this one). She threw the keys and a box at us and said “sorry Rueben is busy”. Another lady working in the store clearly felt awkward and stated “enjoy your new home” that was the last communication we received from Connells. A huge shame and massive difference from the behaviour of our estate agent (max 25) who came to our new house, delivered flowers and had constant communication throughout.

Negative experience: For your sanity, safety, and financial security, please stay WELL CLEAR of Connells. Here are some reasons: 1. Dangerous Houses: We rented a house through them for 12 months while the sale of our property is going through and we look to purchase elsewhere. On moving in, we found the boiler to be leaking oil and was unusable - the air was absolutely filled with noxious fumes and we both had blood coming from our noses. Being pregnant, we couldn’t move in for weeks until it was all fixed. We still have not received recompense for this. 2. Incompetent & Threatening: The landlord requested that we change the bank to which we make payments, which we immediately did. Connells then began issuing us with CCJ threats - and would not stop, despite them knowing we were paying our rent. While they eventually apologised, this caused a lot of stress given we were about to embark on a new mortgage and that this would affect our credit rating. 3. Inhumane and breach of covenant of ‘quiet enjoyment’: We have a rental agreement for another six month for this property, however the landlord wishes to sell it. Needless to say, no one wants to buy the place when there’s an active tenancy for another SIX MONTHS. However, someone has requested to do a viewing next week - on the very day our baby arrives. Up to now, we’ve said that viewings are possible if pre-arranged (which is not incumbent on a tenant to do and was us being kind), but have always been very clear that September and October were 100% out - this was agreed well in advance with Connells and the landlord. Tenants pay a lot in rent and part of those terms is a right to ‘quiet enjoyment’ of their property. At no time is this right more sacrosanct than during those first precious months with a newborn, and for me while recovering from major surgery. Personally, I’m not even having my family to visit until November, so to have strangers walking around my home while I’m remembering how to breastfeed, the baby and I are trying to sleep, midwives are changing dressings etc. is filling me with horror and dread. I would have thought in this day and age everyone would understand this. Both Connells and the landlord originally said ‘of course’ to this stipulation, but now they are going back on their agreement and have said viewings must continue. So the fact that we are now having to prepare for someone to view our home rather than the arrival of our child gives you a taste of the kind of agency they are! The correspondence we received about it yesterday told me that I need to ‘stay in the bedroom’ in the attic, as if I belong in a Brontë novel, or should somehow feel ashamed of new motherhood. So, to conclude, if you are thinking to sell with Connells, please think again, their level of competence means I wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole. If you are thinking of viewing a house with Connells, expect to encounter tearful tenants banished to attics who are in no position to have strangers look around their homes - you will not be welcome! And, most crucially, if you are looking to rent with Connells, expect dangerous houses, no privacy, breach of agreements, and potential life-long consequences to your financial security! …And if you might put me down as a ‘chronic moaner’, this is the very first negative review I have ever had to write on Google, so hopefully this conveys the strength of feeling!
